What is Choghadiya, and which Choghadiyas are auspicious or inauspicious?

When undertaking any activity, an auspicious time (muhurta) is often considered. If you need to travel or perform a significant task unexpectedly, and there isn’t time to consult for an auspicious muhurta, you can use the day’s Choghadiya. Starting tasks during auspicious Choghadiya increases the chances of success. Let’s understand what Choghadiya is and what should be done during each type.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya refers to one-eighth of a day or night. A day consists of 30 Ghatis, each lasting 24 minutes. Four Ghatis make one Choghadiya, which lasts 1.30 hours during both day and night—from sunrise to sunset and from sunset to sunrise, respectively. You can check Choghadiya based on your city’s sunrise time.

Choghadiya and its association with days and planets

Choghadiya is related to days and planets. Choghadiya associated with the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus is considered auspicious, while Choghadiya associated with the Sun, Mars, and Saturn is considered inauspicious. For instance, Sunday is governed by the Sun, so its Choghadiya is called "Udveg" (anxiety). Monday is governed by the Moon, so the first Choghadiya of Monday is "Amrit" (nectar). Tuesday’s first Choghadiya is governed by Mars and is called "Rog" (disease). Wednesday’s first Choghadiya is "Labh" (profit), governed by Mercury. Thursday’s first Choghadiya is "Shubh" (auspicious), governed by Jupiter. Friday’s first Choghadiya is "Char" (mobile), governed by Venus. Saturday’s first Choghadiya is "Kal" (time), governed by Saturn. These Choghadiyas occur in this sequence throughout the day.

What to do in each Choghadiya:

Udveg Choghadiya:

Governed by the Sun, which is considered a malefic planet in astrology, Udveg Choghadiya is deemed inauspicious. It is generally avoided for starting new tasks.

Char Choghadiya:

Governed by Venus, Char Choghadiya is considered good for travel. It is also suitable for buying new clothes.

Shubh Choghadiya:

Governed by Mercury, Shubh Choghadiya is auspicious for any kind of beneficial activities.

Labh Choghadiya:

Governed by Jupiter, Labh Choghadiya is ideal for starting education or learning new skills. It is highly beneficial for new endeavors.

Amrit Choghadiya:

Governed by the Moon, Amrit Choghadiya is considered very beneficial. It is a good time for performing rituals, making financial transactions, and other auspicious tasks.

Kal Choghadiya:

Governed by Saturn, Kal Choghadiya is avoided for auspicious tasks.

Rog Choghadiya:

Governed by Mars, which is considered an unfavorable planet, Rog Choghadiya is usually avoided. However, it is recommended for activities related to defeating enemies or engaging in conflict.

Understanding Choghadiyas and their influences can help you plan your activities more effectively and increase the chances of success.
