Holi – Legends Behind the Festival
According to one mythological story, the demon king Hiranyakashipu was very angry with his son Prahlad for worshiping Lord Vishnu. As a result, he plotted to kill him. Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, sat with Prahlad in the fire. Holika had a magical cloak that allowed her to stay unharmed in fire. However, due to Lord Vishnu’s blessing, Holika burned to ashes while Prahlad remained unharmed. This event occurred on the full moon night of the month of Phalguna, which is why, every year, on this night, people in many parts of India light a fire, called Holika Dahan.
Another legend states that Kamdev (the God of Love) risked his life to reconnect Lord Shiva with creation and household life. Kamdev shot an arrow towards Lord Shiva, which broke his meditation and angered him. As a result, Kamdev was burned to ashes by Shiva’s wrath. But later, when Kamdev’s wife Rati meditated for forty days to revive him, Shiva agreed to bring Kamdev back to life. This is why Holi is celebrated forty days after Vasant Panchami across India.
Holi is not only limited to mythological stories; the festival of colors also has Vedic significance, which greatly influences human life. It is considered a festival that fills everyone’s life with color, without any conflict. However, the suitable colors for each zodiac sign are different. For example, Cancer should use blue and green colors, while Leo should benefit from yellow, red, and orange colors. Learn how each zodiac celebrates Holi and the suitable colors for them!
