Holika Dahan 2026 Puja Method
To perform the ritual with complete devotion, follow these steps:
- Preparation: Wake up early, take a bath, and take a vow (Sankalp) to fast. Clean the area designated for the fire and collect all necessary materials.
- Worship: Create idols of Holika and Prahlad and worship Lord Narasimha. Once the auspicious time arrives, light the fire.
- Circumambulation: Walk around the Holika fire (Parikrama) three times with your family.
- Offerings: Offer wheat ears, gram stalks, barley, cow dung cakes, water, and gulal into the fire while praying to Lord Narasimha.
- Post-Ritual: After the fire calms down, take the sacred ashes home.
Using Holika Ashes for Vastu Defects
If your home has Vastu defects, keeping the ashes of Holika in the southeast direction (Agni angle) is believed to remove negative influences and balance the energy of the house.
What to Do on the Day of Holika Dahan
The day is not just about the fire, but about fostering bravery and joy in the family:
- For Children: Give children wooden swords and encourage them to play as “brave soldiers.” Feed them traditional dishes like puri, kheer, malpua, and halwa.
- Hanuman Puja: Worship Lord Hanuman for auspicious results throughout the year.
- Moon Gazing: View the moon with your entire family to remove the fear of untimely death.

The Importance and Legend of Holika Dahan
The tradition dates back to the era of the demon king Hiranyakashipu and his son, Prahlad. Despite his father’s attempts to stop his devotion to Lord Vishnu, Prahlad remained steadfast.
Finally, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika—who was immune to fire—to sit in a pyre with Prahlad in her lap. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, Holika’s boon failed because of her evil intent; she was burned to ashes while the devotee Prahlad remained untouched. This event is celebrated every year to remind us that faith and righteousness always prevail.
