One of the biggest attractions of Kumbh 2025 will be the Naga Sadhu. Whenever and wherever the Kumbh Mela takes place, many Naga Sadhus come and attract everyone with their mysterious nature. Millions of people are eager to understand the mystery of the Naga Sadhus. Naga Sadhu live separately from society, but during the Kumbh, they leave their meditation and come to take a dip in the holy rivers. People can gain blessings by witnessing them during the Kumbh 2025. At the Ganga ghats, a large number of Naga Sadhus will be seen during Kumbh 2025.

According to some beliefs, the word “Naga” comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Nag,’ which means “one who lives on the mountains.” After becoming Sadhus, they live in the mountains and perform difficult penance, which is why they are called Naga Sadhus. Kumbh 2025 – How Does One Become a Naga Sadhu?

First of all, it’s important to know that Naga Sadhus and Naga Sannyasis are not the same. According to some beliefs, the tradition of Naga Sadhus started during the time of Adi Shankaracharya when warriors were needed to protect Sanatan Dharma. The difference between a Naga Sadhu and a Naga Sannyasi is like the difference between a soldier and a commando. Not every soldier becomes a commando.

Becoming a Sannyasi is much harder than becoming a Sadhu. To become a Naga Sannyasi, one has to undergo 12 years of rigorous penance, starting with Pind Daan (a ritual for ancestors). To become a Naga Sadhu, one must get permission from their family. After that, they must renounce all relationships, treat their family as dead, and perform the ritual for their ancestors. After performing Pind Daan, when a Sadhu dips in the Kumbh, all his family ties are broken. In Kumbh 2025, thousands of people will take initiation to become Naga Sadhus.

The Practice of Naga Sadhus

After completing the initial conditions, Naga Sadhus go to the Himalayas to practice their penance. They have to endure sun, heat, water, and cold while performing their meditation. In the Himalayas, they survive by eating only leaves or fruits. During this time, they wear only Vibhuti (holy ash). The severe penance they undergo generates energy in their body. After such harsh conditions, they become capable of surviving in any weather. Despite the cold in Kumbh 2025, these Naga Sadhus will be seen enduring the harsh conditions.

Appearance of Naga Sadhu

Ash (Bhasma): Naga Sadhus wear Bhasma (holy ash) on their bodies instead of clothes.
Jatas (Hair): Their long hair is a symbol of their devotion. Many Naga Sadhus have Jatas (hair locks) that are 1 to 1.5 meters long.
Weapons: They always carry weapons like a Trishul (trident) or sword in their hands.

Why Do Naga Sadhu Disappear Suddenly?

Whenever the Kumbh Mela takes place, Naga Sadhus can be seen in large numbers with their Akhadas. As the Mela draws to a close, they often disappear, sometimes in full attire, or sometimes in the dark of the night, returning to the Himalayas. Some Naga Sadhus travel to various holy places across the country.

From 4 to 13 Mathas of Naga Sadhu

According to religious scholars, Guru Shankaracharya started the tradition of Naga Sannyasis. Initially, Naga Sadhus were initiated in 4 Mathas, but now there are 13 Mathas. According to ancient scriptures, this tradition was started by Sage Ved Vyasa. The rules for Naga Sadhus are very strict. If they do not receive alms (donation), they sleep hungry.

Naga Sadhus Pick Up Arms to Protect Dharma

Naga Sadhus are also knowledgeable in scriptures and weaponry. It is said that when the country or Sanatan Dharma is in danger, Naga Sadhus come forward to fight for the protection of Dharma. After their death, they are given water or land Samadhi (burial). Naga Sadhus do not undergo traditional cremation.
