Nandi Ji, the divine gatekeeper and beloved attendant of Lord Shiva, is the symbol of loyalty, purity, and unwavering devotion. Known as the guardian of Kailash, he conveys the prayers of devotees directly to Lord Shiva. Pleasing Nandi Ji is said to invoke the grace of Mahadev Himself. During the Samudra Manthan, when Lord Shiva consumed the deadly Halahal poison, Nandi Ji selflessly removed a drop that fell on Earth with his tongue, saving all beings from destruction. He is revered as the first disciple of Lord Shiva and the Guru of the eighteen Siddhars, including Patanjali and Tirumular. In every Shiva temple, the statue of Nandi Ji faces the Shivalinga, signifying that every prayer to Shiva passes through Nandi first.
According to ancient texts, Rishi Shilad performed intense penance to obtain a divine child blessed by immortality and Shiva’s grace. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him Nandi as a son. When sages foretold Nandi’s short lifespan, Nandi began penance to please Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Shiva appeared before him and granted him immortality, appointing him as His vehicle, gatekeeper, and eternal companion. Since then, Nandi stands as a symbol of steadfast devotion, patience, and spiritual strength. It is believed that Lord Shiva listens to every devotee’s prayer only through Nandi.
