Among the twelve Jyotirlingas associated with Lord Shiva, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh holds the fourth position. Lord Shiva Resides with 33 Crore Deities

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located about 78 km from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Narmada River. It is the only temple situated on the northern bank of the river. Lord Shiva resides on both sides of the river and is worshipped here in the forms of Mamaleshwar and Omkareshwar. According to religious beliefs, 68 pilgrimages surround the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, and Lord Shiva resides here with 33 crore deities. On Mondays, devotees gather in large numbers to have darshan and perform puja at this temple.

The Great Secret of the Temple

Like the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, the Shayan Aarti at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is world-famous. The temple performs three aartis daily – in the morning, afternoon, and evening. It is believed that Lord Shiva comes to this temple every night to sleep. Devotees also believe that here Lord Shiva plays Chaupar (a traditional board game) with Goddess Parvati. For this reason, Chaupar boards are spread at night, and astonishingly, no birds disturb them during the night. In the morning, the dice and boards are found scattered exactly as they were during the night.

Religious Legend Associated with Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga 

A legend connects Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga to King Mandhata. Once, the king performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared before him and offered to grant two boons. The king first requested that Lord Shiva reside at this location, and secondly, that his name be associated with the Lord. Since then, Lord Shiva has resided here, and the area is known as Mandhata after the king.

The Story of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga

It is believed that in ancient times, King Mandhata performed penance on the mountain where the Omkareshwar temple now stands. This mountain is also called Mandhata Parvat. Pleased with the king’s devotion, Lord Shiva manifested here. The king requested as a boon that Lord Shiva remain here. Lord Shiva accepted the wish and merged into the Jyotirlinga installed at this site. The Shiva Linga here is considered Swayambhu, meaning self-manifested. Devotees also perform darshan and puja at the Mamaleshwar temple nearby. Worshipping here brings Lord Shiva’s blessings, solves ongoing problems, initiates delayed tasks, and calms a restless mind.
