What is Pradosh? How can one receive the blessings of Shiva on this day?

Pradosh Vrat is one of the most beneficial fasts associated with Lord Shiva. It is observed on the Trayodashi (13th day) of both the waxing and waning phases of the moon each month. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva during the evening of Trayodashi during Pradosh leads to various benefits. Typically, the Pradosh period starts shortly before sunset and lasts for some time after sunset. Reciting Lord Shiva’s mantras during this time is considered highly fruitful.

Significance of Shani and Soma Pradosh

Although worshipping Lord Shiva can be done at any time, the evening worship on Trayodashi holds special significance. Rituals during this time, such as Rudrabhishekam (a specific form of worship), are said to fulfill all endeavors. The significance of Pradosh varies on different days. Among all Pradosh fasts, Shani and Soma Pradosh are considered particularly beneficial. Worshipping on these days leads to the fulfillment of all tasks. Here’s what benefits can be derived from each Pradosh fast:

Ravi Pradosh (Sunday): Worshipping Shiva and chanting the Gayatri mantra fulfills all desires.

Soma Pradosh (Monday): Observing this fast relieves tensions in marital life.

Bhauma Pradosh (Tuesday): This fast helps in debt relief and creates new sources of income.

Budh Pradosh (Wednesday): Worshipping Lord Ganesh along with Shiva during this time fulfills all desires.

Guru Pradosh (Thursday): Performing Shiva worship with Purusha Sukta leads to financial benefits.

Aishwarya Pradosh (Friday): Worshipping during this Pradosh Vrat leads to the attainment of wealth and happiness.

Shani Pradosh (Saturday): Observing this fast helps in attaining progeny and brings success in jobs and business.

How to Worship During Pradosh Vrat

The significance of the Pradosh Vrat was narrated by the sage Sootji to other sages. Sootji mentioned that when people become unrighteous in Kaliyuga, they would face injustice everywhere. During such times, performing the Pradosh fast can help gain the blessings of Shiva. The fast leads to the attainment of desired results. According to Sootji, this fast was first revealed by Lord Shiva to Goddess Sati. The fast of Trayodashi is called Pradosh, and it is observed during the period from sunset before dark (dusk)
It is recommended to observe this fast without food or water. However, exceptions are made for the sick, children, pregnant women, and the elderly. One should take a bath in the morning and worship Lord Shiva with bel leaves, Ganga water, rice, incense, and a lamp. Again, in the evening after bathing, worship Lord Shiva in the same manner. Observing the Pradosh fast in this way bestows merit upon the devotee.
