When is Rishi Panchami Celebrated and What is the Significance of This Fast?

Among Indian festivals, Rishi Panchami Vrat holds a special significance. This fast is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapad. It is observed by women on the day following Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2024, Rishi Panchami will be observed on September 8, 2024. This day is dedicated to the worship of the Saptarishi (Seven Sages), which include Kashyap, Atri, Bharadwaj, Vishwamitra, Gautam Maharishi, Jamadagni, and Vashistha. Although primarily observed by women, men in some places also perform this fast to show their respect and reverence towards the sages. Why Observe the Rishi Panchami Fast?

According to the Puranas, women are generally prohibited from participating in religious activities or household chores during their menstrual period. Until they are completely purified, touching items related to worship or religious activities is considered inappropriate. If a woman inadvertently participates in any religious activity during this period, it is believed to result in a sin. To cleanse oneself from this sin, women observe the Rishi Panchami fast. In some places, men also observe this fast to honor the sage of their family lineage.

How to Perform the Rishi Panchami Puja

Early Morning Rituals: On the day of Rishi Panchami, take a bath early in the morning and resolve to observe the fast.
Prepare the Ritual Space: Create a mandala at home using kumkum (vermilion) and turmeric. Place the idols of the Saptarishi (Seven Sages) in this mandala.
Abhishek: Perform an Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the idols with Panchamrit (a sacred mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar).
Offerings: Offer Yajñopavita (sacred thread), flowers, and Naivedya (food offerings) to the sages.
Fasting: During this fast, women abstain from eating regular food and consume a special dish called Moradhan, which is also known as Sama rice in some places.

Story of Rishi Panchami

In a certain kingdom, a Brahmin lived with his wife and daughter. After the daughter’s marriage, her husband died unexpectedly, and she returned to her parents' home. One day, the mother noticed that her daughter had many insects on her body. Worried, the parents approached a sage. The sage advised them that the daughter had violated the rules of menstruation by touching some worship items during her period. To atone for this sin, she needed to observe the Rishi Panchami fast. The parents then had their daughter observe the Rishi Panchami fast, and as a result, she was freed from the insects. During the Rishi Panchami fast, it is beneficial to read or listen to this story.
