After the flood, a farmer saw a large black stone in his field. When he tried to touch the stone, blood began to flow from it. That night, the farmer had a dream in which Shani Dev himself told him that he resided in that stone and wished to be established near the village.

The villagers installed the stone with great devotion, and since then the place became a major pilgrimage site of Shani Dev. One special feature is that Shani Dev is present here in the form of a stone and not inside any temple structure, but under the open sky. Devotees worship from a distance, and priests offer oil on the stone.

Mysteries Related to Shani Shingnapur

This temple is famous worldwide because none of the houses, shops, or banks in Shingnapur village have doors or locks. Villagers believe that theft cannot occur here because no crime can escape Shani Dev’s gaze. If anyone tries to steal, Shani Dev immediately punishes them—in the form of illness, accident, or social disgrace.

Shani Shingnapur does not have a traditional temple with a dome or roof. The stone is placed openly on a platform. Devotees believe that Shani Dev prefers to stay in the open and no one can confine him within a structure. Earlier, women were not allowed to step onto the main platform for worship. But after years of struggle and social movements, women can now go near the Shani stone and worship.
