Triyuginarayan – The Place Where Parvati and Shiva Got Married

Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the Phalguna month. This year, the auspicious festival will be observed on February 15, 2026. According to the Puranas, this is the day Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati united in holy matrimony. While many celebrate the festival, few know the exact location where the divine couple took their seven rounds (pheras). That sacred place is the Triyuginarayan Temple in Uttarakhand.

Triyuginarayan: The Divine Wedding Venue

Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, the Triyuginarayan Temple is believed to be the site of the celestial wedding established during the Treta Yuga.

The Eternal Flame

According to mythological stories, Mata Parvati, the daughter of King Himavat, performed severe penance to win Lord Shiva’s heart. Pleased by her devotion, Shiva agreed to the marriage. It is believed that the sacred fire that witnessed their wedding rounds still burns in the temple today, earning it the name Akhand Dhuni.

Divine Witnesses: Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma

The wedding was a cosmic event. Lord Vishnu attended as Mata Parvati’s brother to perform the rituals, while Lord Brahma served as the priest. The exact spot of the wedding is marked by the Brahma Shila, situated directly in front of the temple.

The Three Sacred Water Tanks (Kunds)

Before the marriage, three water tanks were created for the deities to bathe in. These tanks are fed by the Saraswati Kund, which is said to have originated from Lord Vishnu:

  • Rudra Kund: Dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Vishnu Kund: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
  • Brahma Kund: Dedicated to Lord Brahma.

Devotees believe that bathing in these tanks, particularly for the bliss of children, is highly auspicious.
