This year, Varaha Jayanti, celebrating the third avatar of Vishnu, will be observed on September 6, the third day of the Bhadrapada month. Lord Varaha is known as the protector of the Earth. He rescued the Earth from the depths of the ocean and reestablished it in space. In many places, Varaha is also worshipped as the Lord of the Earth. His one wife is named Vasundhara, meaning the Earth. Let us understand the story of Varaha Jayanti, how to worship Varaha, and its benefits.
Once, a demon named Hiranyaksha hid the Earth in the deep ocean. When the gods saw the Earth submerged in water, they prayed to Lord Vishnu for its rescue. Vishnu then manifested as Varaha from the nose of Lord Brahma. He assumed a gigantic form, lifted the Earth out of the water, and killed Hiranyaksha. It is said that after this, Lord Varaha also stabilized the Earth with his hooves and created the oceans.
Varaha Jayanti is celebrated on a large scale in South India. People wake up in the morning, make a Sankalp for worship, and chant Varaha mantras. If you wish to benefit from the worship of this special avatar of Vishnu, you should:
- Take a bath in the morning and make a resolution for the worship of Lord Varaha.
- Perform an abhishekam (ritual bath) of Lord Varaha's idol with Panch Dhavya or flower nectar.
- Chant the mantras of Lord Varaha during this time.
- Conduct Yajnas and Homas for Lord Varaha.
- Donate to Brahmins and those in need.

His eyes are very beautiful, and his face is gentle like that of a boar. He holds a conch, discus, mace, and lotus in his hands, with Vasundhara (Earth Goddess) seated in his lap. Visualizing Lord Varaha in this manner during meditation can also help fulfill your desired wishes.
