What Is Pitra Dosh? What Are Its Harms?

Pitra Dosh forms as a planetary combination in the birth chart, which people often associate with the fifth and ninth houses. When Rahu–Ketu occupy the ninth and fifth houses, or when they join the lords of these houses, when Rahu–Ketu join Jupiter, or when the lords of the fifth and ninth houses stay in debilitation or remain in the sixth, eighth, or twelfth house, people call it Pitra Dosh. In the birth chart, the Sun represents the father, so when the Sun suffers affliction, people also consider it Pitra Dosh.

What Are the Harms?

The greatest harm of Pitra Dosh is loss of fortune. When 99% of work gets completed and then collapses back to zero, people consider it a sign of Pitra Dosh. A person works with full effort, but when the result depends on luck, that luck betrays the person. This becomes the biggest harm of Pitra Dosh. Apart from this, differences with the father or lack of father’s comfort also reflect its impact. Sometimes the health of the father or mother deteriorates at an important moment, causing loss in the work.

Does Pitra Dosh Affect Children?

Pitra Dosh creates child-related problems such as delay in childbirth, miscarriage, birth of a disabled child, or the child’s death. This becomes the most negative effect of this dosh. Sometimes issues related to spirits, ghosts, or occult problems also appear due to Pitra Dosh.

Why Does Pitra Dosh Form?

The birth chart acts as an account of past lives and shows which good or bad deeds we performed earlier, whose results bring happiness or sorrow in this life. When we fail to fulfill our duties toward our parents and elders in past lives, do not serve them, behave improperly, or do not perform Shraddha, this combination forms in the chart. People consider Pitra Dosh a curse of restless and unsatisfied ancestral souls.

Remedy for Pitra Dosh

People perform Nag Narayan Bali Puja for known ancestors and for those who die due to long illness or unnatural death. This puja has no connection with Pitra Dosh in the birth chart. When Pitra Dosh appears in the birth chart, one should perform Tripindi Shradh, which is for unknown ancestors. Scriptures consider Trimbakeshwar the best place for this puja. If someone cannot go there, they may perform it at any pilgrimage site where a holy river flows and proper rituals take place. Gaya in Bihar, Pushkar in Rajasthan, and Narayani Shila in Haridwar are main places for performing this puja.

Special Rules for Women

If this dosh appears in a girl’s chart, she performs this puja after marriage along with her husband. Before marriage, the girl may recite Vishnu Sahasranama.

Read These Stotras for Pitra Dosh

Vishnu Sahasranama, Gajendra Moksha, and Aditya Hridaya Stotra are main stotras in our scriptures that possess the power to remove any kind of problem. A man or woman who cannot perform the puja may recite these stotras to free themselves from major problems and gain peace from the effects of Pitra Dosh.

When to Perform the Puja?

People should perform the puja for Pitra Dosh in Krishna Paksha, and scriptures mention some special dates for it. Performing this puja during Pitra Paksha gives more auspicious results, and Pitra Amavasya becomes the best day for it.
